What Is Sedation Dentistry

What is Sedation Dentistry?

If you have a fear of visiting the dental office, sedation may be the best option for you. It’s not uncommon for fearful patients to forgo regular treatment because of anxiety. We offer oral conscious sedation that is both easy to take as well as incredibly effective at relaxing you for the appointment. Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who want to be able to visit the office without fear, anxiety or panic attacks.

Why is Sedation Dentistry needed?

Sedation dentistry is safe and effective for most patients. It is administered via a pill that you take similarly to an aspirin or vitamin. Some of the reasons you’d want to consider sedation dentistry include:

  • You suffer panic attacks in the dental office
  • You find yourself cancelling appointments regularly due to fear
  • You have extreme fear over the visit
  • You hate the smells and sounds associated with dental treatment
  • You have a hard time sitting still while work is being done
  • You are coming in for more complex work or multiple procedures
Why Is Sedation Dentistry Needed

"I really like this dentistry! It's good because they are very precise with scheduling and are also very precise with tooth operations. I recently got a crown and the operation was very fast and simple. I am totally satisfied with every mouth operation I have gotten from Foothill Dental! I highly recommend them!"

Who Is A Candidate For Sedation Dentistry

Who is a candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

We will go over your medical and health history to determine if oral conscious sedation is right for you. You will need to have someone who is willing to drive you both to and from the office when undergoing sedation. Even if you feel well enough to drive, it is not safe for you to get behind a wheel. You should have the ability to swallow a multivitamin-sized pill in order to begin the sedation.

What happens during Sedation Dentistry?

We will provide you with a pill about an hour before your procedure begins. Within that hour, you will enter a deeply relaxed and semi-conscious state. You will be awake for the procedure, but you may not remember it well. Oral conscious sedation works quickly and its effects will often begin to wear off within just a few hours. Once the procedure is done, we’ll take you to one of our recovery rooms so that you can wake up from the treatment. You will need to have a friend or relative bring you home from the appointment.

If you think you might benefit from conscious sedation, call our office so that we can get you in for a convenient consultation appointment.
