What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Your wisdom teeth are the very last molars to develop within the mouth. Oftentimes, patients do not have enough room for these molars to come in because they are so far back in the mouth. When wisdom teeth are left impacted underneath the gums, they can cause issues with shifting, damage to surrounding teeth as well as infection and inflammation. They should be removed as soon as it’s found they pose a problem to your oral health.

If you leave your impacted wisdom teeth in place, they can eventually cause problems to your oral health as well as surrounding teeth. If you ignore these third molars, they will only get bigger with time, making them more difficult to remove. How can you tell if you’ll need Wisdom Teeth Removed?
There are a few signs to look for that will signal a problem with your wisdom teeth. Wisdom tooth pain often comes and goes, so you may be experiencing severe pain one week and nothing the next. Regardless, it’s best to have the teeth removed before they cause severe damage. Some signs to look for include:
- Pain and soreness that isn’t tooth-specific
- Infection and gum inflammation
- Bleeding and persistent bad breath
- Pain to surrounding teeth
- Shifting of your teeth (causing overcrowding)
- Headaches and earaches that aren’t medically explainable otherwise
What happens during Wisdom Teeth Removal?
We first offer you sedation to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Once you are sedated, we will create small incisions into the gums and remove the impacted wisdom teeth underneath. Stitches are then placed to close the gums and promote even, quick healing to the area. You will go home biting down on gauze to stop any bleeding. You will need to have a friend or relative bring you home from your appointment as you may be too groggy to drive yourself. The pain and swelling from wisdom tooth removal should only last for about a week after the surgery is complete.
